Map of Palawan

Did you know? 🤔

📌 When the Chinese first reached the Philippines , Palawan was one of the first places that they reached, traveling across land bridges directly in to the area. They were the first to name the area and it has been so-named ever since, although the spelling and pronunciation have changed slightly over time (from Palau -ye to the current Palawan ). During the twelfth century, the people of Malay began moving in to the area and using it as an agricultural base for establishing a new community. The lived peacefully in the area until the beginning of the seventeenth century when the Spanish began to take control of the area.

The Spanish stayed in the area until the beginning of the twentieth century. At that time, there was a revolution and the American government took control of the area, establishing a local government there and encouraging local development. It was then that Puerto Princesa became the area’s capital. Despite this, the area is doing well and travelers are encouraged to visit.

Dialect in Palawan 🗣

📌 Palawano (Palaw’an)
Palawano is a member of Palawanic branch of the Philippine language family. It is spoken in Palawan province in the Mimaropa region of the Philippines. There are in fact three languages known as Palawano:

Brooke’s Point Palawano (Pela’wan), which is spoken by about 14,400 people in the southeast of Palawan island.
Central Palawano, which is spoken in the southwest of Palawan island by about 12,000 people. It is also known as Quezon Palawano.
Southwest Palawano, which is spoken in the southwest of Palawan island by about 12,000 people.

📌 Sample text in Central Palawano
🗣 Tagnà ginona it Empò ì langit nà donyà. Nà pegkegona ye kediye it donyà, kara ngay kegonaan nà mekonàwas nga, nà medlem ngay at donom. Nà megpedlibilibo ì Nakem it Empò at menga danom. Nà moda leng it Empò, “Menyadi nè araynawag”. Moda nominawag.

📌 Tranlsation:
✍️🏼 In the beginning God created heaven and earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep water. The spirit of God was hovering over the water. Then God said, “Let there be light!” So there was light.

Woah, that’s amazing! Now let’s tackle the lifestyle and the oldest church of Palawan!

📌 Palawan’s economy is basically agricultural. The three major crops are palay, corn and coconut. Mineral resources include nickel, copper, manganese, and chromite. Logging is also a major industry. Palawan has one of the richest fishing grounds in the country. Having natural gas reserves of approximately 30,000 trillion cubic feet, the province is the only oil-producing province in the country. In addition, tourism is also a thriving sector, having received 1.8 million tourists in 2018.

Saint Augustine Church

📌 Saint Augustine Church was first constructed of nipa by the Augustinian Recollects, but was rebuilt in its current form in the early 18th century to be able to repel marauding Moro raiders during the Spanish period, doubling as a launching pad for Recollect missionaries in the Christianization of Palawan. Saint Augustine Church, located in Cuyo, Palawan, is a fortress-church that has been one of the favorite destinations of many pilgrims to rejuvenate their spirits and feel closer to God.

Well, church is such a nice place as well as the nature. Closer to nature. Closer to God!❤❤❤

Festivals : The greatness of a culture can be found in it’s festivals.

Balayong Festival

📌 The festival at the beginning of March commemorates the founding anniversary of the City of Puerto Princesa, Palawan, highlighted by balayong tree-planting, street dancing and a colourful floral parade depicting the Palawan Cherry Blossoms from which the festival derives its name.

Baragatan Festival

📌 Happens annually, in the two weeks leading up to the province’s Foundation Day held on June 23. Baragatan is a Cuyunon (dialect in Palawan) word that means to gather. The festival aims to bring people together and to showcase what the province has to offer, from its delicious food to its charming tourist spots.

Cuyo Fiesta

📌 The municipality of Cuyo in Palawan celebrates its fiesta during the month of August. Their celebration is somewhat similar to the Ati-Atihan Festival. Those who participate in this event blacken their skin and would usually dance in complete abandonment to the musical beat of the drums.

Yay!! We are now done, about the brief history of Palawan! Now, here’s the most exciting part! Get ready to know the most and known foods and places in Palawan that tourists loved the most!!! Let’s go 🤩🤗

Foods : There is no sincere love than the love of food 🍽

📌 Chicken Inasal is a delicious grilled chicken dish. The chicken is marinated in a unique blend of spices and herbs, then grilled until done. Several restaurants in Palawan island serve this special grilled chicken dish and they are all very good.

📌 Literally translated, it means “Mix-Mix” in Filipino. Halo Halo is a popular refreshing drink which consists of a mixture of sweetened preserved fruits, evaporated milk and crushed ice. The topping is either ice cream or leche flan.

📌 If you are going to Coron, make sure to try the popular dish danggit lamayo. It consists in sun-dried Rabbitfishes marinated in vinegar, garlic, and pepper. Danggit Lamayo is served for breakfast in most of the hotels and guesthouses.

📌 Another exotic dish you can try in Palawan is Crocodile Sisig, a variation of the sizzling dish that typically uses pork. The taste of crocodile meat is similar to chicken, mild flavoured and firm in texture. It’s a healthy meat due to its high protein and low-fat composition.

📌 Lato seaweed, also known as or sea grapes or green caviar is a very popular dish in Palawan due to its soft and succulent texture. It is best served with either salt or vinegar and is a perfect match to any dish especially fried ones. Lato seaweed is very common to the Philippines and nearby countries, however, the best quality comes from the municipality of Cuyo in Palawan.

Well, we can say that Palawan has a unique and mouth – watering types of foods! 🤤🍽

Beach : Some people look for beautiful place, others make it beautiful

📌 Linapacan is a medium – sized island in the Calamianes group, located between Coron to the north and the Palawan mainland to the south. It’s one of those islands which rarely sees a tourist, as there’s no public ferry or air travel. Getting there can be a bit hit-and-miss, particularly if the weather is bad.

📌 El Nido is a Philippine municipality on Palawan island. It’s known for white-sand beaches, coral reefs and as the gateway to the Bacuit archipelago, a group of islands with steep karst cliffs. Miniloc Island is famed for the clear waters of its Small and Big lagoons. Nearby Shimizu Island has fish-filled waters. The area has many dive sites, including Dilumacad Island’s long tunnel leading to an underwater cavern.

📌 Coron is a tropical island in the province of Palawan in the Philippines. Coron is best known for world-class World War II-era wreck diving, the island also offers limestone karst landscapes, beautiful beaches, crystal-clear freshwater lakes, and shallow-water coral reefs. Without a doubt, Coron has some of the most pristine beaches I’ve ever seen. They’re remote, not as crowded as other places in The Philippines, are tough to get to and thus, are as natural as it can get and extremely gorgeous! Coron is also a diver’s paradise, offering numerous shipwreck diving sites and coral gardens.

📌 Puerto Princesa is a coastal city on Palawan Island in the western Philippines. It’s a base for boat trips through the massive limestone caves and underground river of the biodiverse Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park. Dive sites are dotted around Puerto Princesa Bay, home to long-nosed dolphins, turtles and rays. Close to the port is the 19th-century Immaculate Concepcion Cathedral.

📌 Cuyo Islands

Cuyo is a small island in the open ocean, so the winds are consistent, making it a good spot for kitesurfing. And unlike Boracay, it is not so well known, so you can expect a lot more space.

Here, you can find the well-preserved Cuyo Fortress Church built during the Spanish-colonial era as well as many small islands and diving sites.

📌 Taytay

Taytay may not be as popular as other cities in Philippines, but don’t let that fool you. Taytay is a smaller but beautiful upcoming tourist destination that is worth a visit. You will be surprised by some of the unique things to do and places you can explore at this hidden destination.

📌 San Vicente Long Beach

San Vicente is an emerging tourist destination nestled in between the popular Palawan destinations El Nido and Puerto Princesa.

Located on the northwestern side of Palawan Island, it is home to the longest white-sand beach in the Philippines and the second-longest in Southeast Asia, aptly named Long Beach. Aside from Long Beach, the main highlight of San Vicente, it is a peaceful fishing village that offers more tourist spots. It is blessed with untouched lush forests, beautiful islands, majestic waterfalls and enchanting mangroves.

📌 Port Barton

Port Barton is one of the lesser-known places that are worth seeing. It’s less crowded than El Nido and it’s perfect for a stress-free weekend gateway. Port Barton is very affordable and has a laid-back atmosphere.

Port Barton’s main beach, known as Itay Itay, is filled with rustic accommodation, beach chalets, restaurants, and bars.
